Pools to reopen and racket sports to restart at WV Active

Following a successful reopening of gyms at Wolverhampton’s WV Active leisure centres on 25 July, work is underway to prepare to reopen swimming pools and sports halls from this weekend.

The pools at WV Active Central and WV Active Bilston-Bert Williams will reopen tomorrow (Saturday 1 August), while on the same day racket sports will return at WV Active Aldersley and WV Active Bilston-Bert Williams.

Lane swimming and public swimming sessions are available for the first week, followed by the reintroduction of adult swimming lessons, pool-based fitness classes and family swim sessions from Monday 10 August.

WV Active Bilston-Bert Williams and WV Active Central are also offering a limited amount of dedicated swim sessions for members who have been shielding during the coronavirus pandemic. These sessions will have fewer participants than others.

The City of Wolverhampton Council-run centres are open only to existing members until 1 September, and membership fees for existing members will be waived for the month of August as a thank you.

All activities at the centres must be booked in advance, with social distancing measures in place along with hand sanitising stations and an enhanced cleaning regime throughout.

The number of participants will be limited and members are asked to arrive ‘beach ready’ for their swim session with swimwear on underneath their clothes. Changing rooms and showers are available after each session for a limited amount of time.

The City of Wolverhampton Council’s Cabinet Member for City Environment, Councillor Steve Evans, said: “We’ve had a really successful reopening across all three sites with lots of positive feedback from our members.

“The team at WV Active have been working extremely hard to implement new safety measures to keep members safe during their visit.

“We’re now going into the second phase of reopening which includes the return of our swimming pools and rackets sports. We hope this will be as successful as the reopening of our gyms.”
