Your Labour Group is in control of the Council, this means they are at the heart of decision making at the Council

In total there are 60 elected councillors.  47 of these are Labour Councillors, as the biggest party Labour is in control of the Council.  The Leader of the Labour Group is therefore the Leader of the Council, the Deputy Leader, the Deputy Leader of the Council and senior Labour Councillors are appointed to the ten Cabinet posts.

The Cabinet

The Cabinet is part of the council’s decision making process. Decisions about the day to day running of council services are taken by the Cabinet within the framework of the council’s constitution, budgets and plans approved by the council.

Scrutiny Chairs

The purpose of ‘Scrutiny’ is to improve the Council’s performance by monitoring, questioning and making recommendations on the way that services are provided and decisions taken. Scrutiny has two main roles: 

Committee & Panel Chairs

Some Council decisions are dealt with by multi party Committees and Panels. Each party represented on the Council fill the seats on these Committees and Panels based on their strength on the Council as a whole.
