Labour “fair for all” alternative budget

Cllr Andrew Johnson introduced Labour's alternative budget at Full Council on 3rd March 2010.

Describing the budget put forward by the Conservative/ Lib Dem alliance as an "election gimmick” designed to win votes in an election year, he argued that their much publicised 0% increase in Council Tax was like “Robin Hood in reverse” with the most vulnerable members of our community funding the nil increase through higher service charges.

Labour argued instead for a fair and prudent budget. They proposed to raise the Council tax by 1%, the income generated from this and other efficiencies would then be used to reinstate cuts to many of the front-line services Labour have been campaigning to protect.
