Vote to Maintain Ekta Centre in its current location

Labour Councillor Elias Mattu, who supported by his Labour colleagues has been leading the campaign to ensure the Ekta Centre, a day Centre for Asian Elders, remains open and in its current location, moved the following motion at Full Council on 16th December 2009:

“This Council notes the decision of Adults and Community Scrutiny Panel to refer the proposals on the Ekta Centre back to the Cabinet. It notes the extent of the community support for the Centre expressed in the consultation exercise and calls on the Cabinet to continue to support the centre in its current location.”

This resolution was seconded by Labour Councillor Tersaim Singh who highlighted the fact that Councillor Pugh had attended none of the consultation events with service users.

Bowing to pressure from the community and Labour Councillors the Conservative Group and the majority of the Liberal Democrat Group decided not to vote – meaning that Labour won the vote a victory for the community and the Labour Group!
