Labour Councillor Steve Evans who has been leading the campaign to keep Underhill House, a residential care home for the elderly, open, moved the following resolution at Full Council on 4th November 2009:
Wolverhampton Council resolves to re-consider and accept the financial offer made by Trevor Beattie to cover any financial differential the city council may incur by keeping open Underhill House Residential Care Home.
This resolution was seconded by Labour Leader Councillor Roger Lawrence who said Labour Councillors had been forced to take this issue to Full Council as no Councillor’s had been given any other opportunity to consider Trevor Beattie's offer.
In a tactical move, branded as "disgraceful" by Cllr Steve Evans the Conservative opposition proposed an amendment which rejected Trevor Beattie’s offer of financial assistance to keep the home open for one year, proposing instead to "thank Mr Beattie for the spirit in which the offer has been made".
